At 5;15 there was no Q in sight so I finally stepped up. Started out with the usual warmup including SSH, Imperial walkers, Morrocan night clubs, and a mosey that included high knees and butt kickers. We all met at the base of the tower where I advised everyone that this was there lucky day, they were getting a flight lesson and the best part, it was free. The plan: We would fly 4 circuits in the airport traffic pattern which consist of 4 legs. Upwind( takeoff and final landing approach) Crosswind, Downwind, Base and Final. The pattern would emulate a standard traffic pattern consisting of left turns around the tower. After a brief description of each leg or maneuver we completed an exercise and moved on.
1st circuit
Takeoff, maximum effort to gain alt. as quickly as possible 10 burpees
Crosswind, continue the climb 20 mountain climbers
Downwind , the downwind leg was used to practice flight maneuvers which is normally not done in the traffic pattern but no one was watching , Climbs and descents 15 incline and 15 decline merkins
Base, Slow down and begin descent 30 overhead claps
Final, Get low and slow for landing, lots of groans on this one, 50 yard army crawl
2nd circuit
Takeoff, 10 burpees
Crosswind, 16 get ups
Downwind, Slow fight bear crawl
Base, 20 morrocan night cubs
Final, we encountered the dreaded crosswind, used the crab method 50 yard crab walk
We messed up the landing due to the crosswind so we had to do a go around (jail break)
3rd Circuit
Takeoff, the usuall beloved 10 burpees
Crosswind, jump squats
Down wind, turns 30 American Hammers and 20 side step ground touches
Base, 30 overhead claps
Final, again being confronted with a crosswind we used the side slip method, 20 plank walks
Circuit 4
Takeoff, the crosswind was still pretty stiff so we had to use ailerons to bank into the wind and opposite rudder to keep us aligned with the runway which caused us to liftoff one wheel before the other, 10 one leg burpees
Cross wind, 20 shoulder taps
Downwind, The often feared aerodynamic stall, Increasing the angle of attack until the wing can no longer produce lift, 25 bottom half squat, see, nothing to be scared of
Base 20 morrocan night clubs
Final, Short field approach, slow the aircraft down as much as possible which requires the addition of power (backside of the power curve) Touchdown and apply brakes. the only thing I could come up with was 50 LBCs and we fished of with a perfect landing and a trip up the tower for the FNG Philip who acquired his new name Jake ( from State Farm), welcome Jake! My VQ came a little sooner than expected but it all work out, Thanks for the opportunity!
